CASE STUDY
HumaniFAI is currently leading a programme of research and consultancy focused on trust recovery in AI enabled systems following significant system failure or loss of capability. The work addresses contexts in which confidence in automated or AI supported systems has been substantially degraded, and where organisations are seeking to understand how trust can be safely and appropriately re established.
Following major system failures, organisations often face significant uncertainty about how trust in AI systems should be rebuilt. There is a risk of both premature re reliance and long term disuse, particularly where the causes and consequences of failure are not well understood. Empirical evidence on how individuals and teams recalibrate trust over time, and on how recovery processes should be designed and governed, remains limited.
The programme applies established human factors and behavioural science methods to examine trust as a dynamic and evolving process. This includes analysing how users interpret and make sense of failure, how their behaviour adapts in response, and how system design, communication strategies and organisational responses influence trust recovery over time.
The ongoing work is generating evidence on the mechanisms through which trust is lost, stabilised and potentially regained following catastrophic failure. Early findings are informing the development of design considerations, training approaches and governance strategies that support recovery without encouraging complacent reliance or permanent disengagement. The programme continues to explore how organisations can better support safe re adoption of AI enabled systems after significant loss of confidence.
