CASE STUDY
HumaniFAI is currently supporting an ongoing programme of research and consultancy examining the people implications of AI adoption within workforce intensive domains. The work focuses on understanding how AI enabled systems affect roles, responsibilities, skills requirements and patterns of work across teams and organisations, alongside broader organisational and policy considerations.
As organisations seek to introduce AI to improve efficiency and support decision making, there remains limited empirical evidence on how these systems reshape work in practice. Key concerns include changes to workload distribution, professional judgement and accountability, evolving training and skills needs, and the longer term implications of AI adoption for workforce sustainability.
The work applies established human factors and socio technical methods to examine work as it is actually performed rather than as it is assumed to operate. This includes analysing task allocation, decision authority, cognitive workload, and interactions between AI systems, people and organisational processes. HumaniFAI contributes human factors expertise alongside other project partners to support a comprehensive understanding of these impacts.
The ongoing work is developing a clearer picture of how AI adoption affects people and teams in practice, highlighting both risks and unintended consequences, as well as opportunities for improvement. Emerging findings are informing workforce planning discussions, training strategies and more realistic expectations about the benefits and limitations of AI enabled systems, supporting more sustainable and responsible adoption.
